Common Chord — May 2026
Monthly insights and musical guidance from Dr. Bob Lawrence
A publication of The Dallas School of Music
As we move further into the year, our focus turns to a principle that shapes how meaningful musical progress is built:
Process.
At The Dallas School of Music, growth is not the result of isolated moments of effort. It is the result of how students work—lesson by lesson, week by week, over time.
Progress is not accidental.
It is constructed.
THEME
Process Defines Progress
Students do not improve simply by spending time. They improve by engaging in the right work, in the right sequence, with clear direction.
A well-structured lesson introduces specific objectives.
Practice reinforces those objectives with intention.
Over time, this process produces measurable growth.
Without process, effort becomes inconsistent.
With process, learning becomes focused and productive.
DEVELOPMENT
Throughout May, our instructional focus emphasizes how students engage with their work.
Students are being guided to:
• Understand what they are working on and why
• Approach practice with clear, defined objectives
• Build consistency through repeatable routines
This is where real progress begins.
Not with more time—but with better use of time.
When students understand the process, they move forward with greater clarity and efficiency.
COMMUNITY
Across our studios, we see students becoming more intentional in their work.
They are:
• Practicing with greater focus
• Asking more thoughtful questions
• Beginning to recognize what productive effort looks like
Families play an important role in reinforcing this process—supporting consistency, encouraging structure, and helping students stay engaged between lessons.
This shared commitment strengthens the learning environment and supports steady, meaningful progress.
CODA
As May unfolds, we carry forward a principle that defines how progress is built:
Process creates results.
When students engage consistently, work with intention, and follow a clear path, growth becomes predictable, measurable, and sustainable.
