Musical Beginning

Discovering a lifelong passion for music through the freedom of creative expression, the joy of playing with others, and the desire to develop a deeper understanding of music.

I knew pretty soon after playing my first few guitar chords that I'm going to fall in love with playing music and probably do so for the rest of my life. It's something that's very magical to me. To be able to express yourself with sounds is something I am forever grateful for as not as many folks are blessed enough to express themselves at all. At first I just wanted to be able to improvise and jam with other musicians as it seemed like such a freeing experience to be able to play and speak through an instrument fluently. My friend, Steven, was and still is taking lessons at DSM. So I realized if I ever really wanted to get to a level to play effectively with other folks I needed to study music and understand it from a theory perspective.

PRACTICE

A Weekly Practice Approach

Developing fluency on the cello through disciplined practice, technical fundamentals, and the patience required to transform musical understanding into physical mastery.

I ebb and flow with practice. Nowadays I gravitate more towards writing music instead of practicing it, but I have been learning the cello the past year or so. So to get as fluent as I am on bass I know I need to sit through the hours and grind out scales, arpeggios, intervals, modes, other core building blocks and exercises to get my hands familiar with the giant hunk of wood. I can already sound out the music in my head, now with the cello, it's simply getting the muscle memory with my fingers to be able to play it.

DEVELOPMENT

On Challenge

Understanding the balance between supporting and leading within an ensemble, while developing the reading and bowing techniques essential to mastering the cello.

With the bass it's learning the role of the bass in the context of a band. When to stand out and when to just hold down a groove. This is something to worry about further down the line if you are just starting out, but I am realizing it is what separates from being good to being great. With the cello it's been reading notation and the bowing is absolutely brutal. Reading is for nerds. (It's not)

On Achievements

Recognizing that musical growth requires understanding when to lead and when to support, while embracing the technical challenges of mastering multiple instruments.

Honestly getting to write a mass with Dr Bob I'd say. We're taking a stab in Mozart's wheelhouse of something like a requiem mass. Way above my pay grade as I am more fluent in simple music like rock or experimental noise. But I can't think of a higher achievement than dedicating a work to God. I am hoping it might put in a good word for me with the big guns upstairs, cause imma need it when I get up there someday.

Growth Beyond Lessons

Discovering through music that life is filled with opportunities for creativity, self-expression, and approaching everyday experiences with a fresh perspective.

It's really helped open my eyes to life is what you make it. You could go through the motions and get the job done. Which can be good in and of itself or realize in that moment of time we're given chances to be creative. It's definitely made me sing a different tune than how I use to approach life.

PERSPECTIVE

On Discipline and Consistency

Learning to appreciate personal milestones, embrace patience, and recognize that meaningful musical growth comes through discipline, consistency, and dedicated practice.

I've gotten much better at being patient with my progress. It's very easy for me to compare myself to legendary musicians and forget to celebrate milestones I make as a student of music. I've been playing for about eight years now and looking back the times I've really made progress in my skill level were the times I've been very disciplined about putting aside time to practice and write music.

Beyond the Instrument

Finding inspiration, encouragement, and gratitude through the mentorship of dedicated teachers whose wisdom, kindness, and passion for music make every lesson meaningful.

I've been lucky enough to learn under Flick for cello and Dr Bob for bass, and I don't care what they say about either of these guys.. These two are great men. They're joyful, they're considerate, they're wise, and they know music. There's not a day I don't look forward to going to school and learning from these guys. They've helped me in numerous ways, but especially with being grateful for the opportunity to learn from them.

On Teaching and Learning

Finding inspiration in the artists you admire, developing your own creative voice, and embracing lessons as an opportunity to grow, stay motivated, and discover the joy of making music.

Try and mimic the artists you love. Honestly for me it's not even musicians sometimes, but I just try and replicate their style of art. After a while you begin to create your own unique voice. Lessons are blessings. They do help you stay motivated and continue to get better and better. It's tough starting out with anything in life, but once you get decent at something then the fun begins!

MUSICAL IDENTITY

On Artistic Direction

Exploring the richness of classical music, discovering its influence on contemporary styles, and pursuing a lifelong dream of composing classical works.

I'm on a deep dive of classical music as it's fascinating to learn. It's interesting seeing how much of bleeds into music today. I've been wanting to write classical music ever since I was a kid so I'm excited to learn more about it.

On Goals and Aspirations

Exploring the richness of classical music, discovering its influence on contemporary styles, and pursuing a lifelong dream of composing classical works.

I'm in quite a few projects as being a bass player everybody needs one cause nobody wants to play the bass.. More for me I guess, one is a collaborative performance rock group I guess you could call it. I have a lot of half written songs my friend Steven and I want to write out and produce. Also like I said earlier writing a mass with Doc. Would be a real blessing to be able to hire out a live orchestra to perform and record it.

On the DSM Experience

Appreciating DSM's focused, practical approach to music education, where personalized instruction and a deeper understanding of musical structure take priority over traditional academic requirements.

I am very grateful for this school. I don't have to go to a music college and have to take classes I don't care about or pay a college tuition. DSM gets right into learning the actual structure of how music works. Which as a musician is all I really care to learn about.. Don't think I'll be using algebra anytime soon. Maybe some day who knows...
